Pedofili karmaşık, kompulsif, psikoseksüel bir bozukluk olup, çocukların istismarı ve istismarın toplumsal etkileri açısından çok önemli sorunlara yol açar.
Klinisyenlerin pedofilik bireylerin özelliklerini, farklılıklarını, çeşitlerini tanımaları, istismar riski olan çocuklar hakkında bilgi sahibi olmaları, pedofilik bireylerin tekrar eylemde bulunma riskleri ve tedavi yöntemleri ve tedaviye cevap özelliklerini bilmeleri bu durumun olabildiğince kontrol altına alınması açısından önemlidir. Pedofilik bireylerin tekrar eylemde bulunma riskinin azaltılmasında farmakolojik ve davranış terapisinin yakın adli ve klinik izlemle birleştirilmesinin en etkili yöntem olduğu bilinmektedir. Ancak bütün bu yöntemlerin hepsi kullanılsa bile bu bireylerin çocuğa cinsel yönelimlerinin değişmeyeceği akılda tutulmalıdır.
Cinsel istismarı ortadan kaldırmanın en etkin yolunun, oluşmasını önlemek olduğu bilinmektedir. Ülkemizde pedofilik bireylerin yargılanması ve cezalandırılmasında büyük sorunlar yaşanması, suçun tekrar işlenmesinin önlenememesi nedeniyle bu bireylerin saptanması, kayıt altına alınması ve tedavisi ile ilgili yasal düzenlemelerin acilen yapılması gereklidir.
Çocukların pedofilik bireyler tarafından cinsel olarak istismar edilmesinin önüne geçmek için daha ileri klinik çalışmalarla pedofilik bireylerdeki farklılıkları tespit etmek, etkili adli, klinik yöntemler ve tedaviler geliştirmek gerekmektedir.
